How much compost do I need?

The quantity depends on the area you want to improve and the application rate recommended for your chosen compost. Compare bags by their volume in litres, as bag weights can vary with ingredients and moisture content.

If the packaging recommends a layer of compost, a 1 cm layer over one square metre requires 10 litres. Use this calculation alongside the product’s directions to estimate how many bags you need.

Is compost the same as potting mix?

Compost is generally used to add organic matter to existing soil. Potting mix is formulated as a growing medium for plants in containers. For pots and planters, choose a suitable potting mix and only add compost where the product instructions recommend it.
