Scoria

Scoria is a type of volcanic rock that forms when magma rich in gases cools and solidifies rapidly during a volcanic eruption. It is popular as a growing medium or decorative topper for bonsai, cactus, succulents and other plants.

Mineraland Scoria is a popular brand available in striking red and black colors. Gritty Mix contains scoria as well, along with other ingredients such as pumice.

Key Features: 

  • Porous and lightweight: Full of holes (vesicles) created by gas bubbles trapped in the lava.
  • Dark color: Usually black or dark brown/red.
  • Rough texture: Sharp, jagged, and brittle.
