Lucerne Hay
We stock an extensive range of lucerne hay (also known as alfalfa) for various pets, including rabbits, guinea pigs, and horses. For adult rabbits over 6 months old, it is recommended to give lucerne in moderation, as it can provide excessive amounts of calcium and protein, which may lead to urinary issues and/or weight gain. Lucerne can be a great occasional treat for rabbits. For baby rabbits under 6 months, Lucerne is fine. Leftover lucerne can be added to the garden as an excellent nitrogen-boosting fertiliser.
Cubes & Pellets: These are an excellent way to provide lucerne in a more solid form. The hardness encourages chewing and supports dental health. The texture of pellets and cubes can help wear down rabbit teeth, which grow continuously. Cubes and pellets are also preferred by many rabbits and guinea pigs, making them great treats. Lucerne pellets also make an excellent cat litter with natural odour control from chlorophyll.
Lucerne Chaff: This is lucerne hay that has been cut into small pieces, usually about 2 cm long. It is commonly used as a high-fibre, high-protein feed for horses and rabbits. For horses, it is often mixed with grains to slow down fast eaters and improve digestion.
Lucerne Bales: These are a great economical and bulk option for horses or those with many rabbits and guinea pigs. Lucerne bales can also be used as a fertiliser or mulch in the garden. One suggested application is to add the leftover lucerne from your rabbit's hutch to the garden.
