Mushroom Grow Kits
Shop our extensive range of Mushroom Grow Kits, available in three popular brands: Mushroom Kit, Life Cykel, and Little Acre. These kits offer a simple, beginner-friendly way to grow your own mushrooms at home. Each kit includes a pre-inoculated substrate, so there’s no need for sterilisation or any advanced mycology knowledge. They can be grown indoors without sunlight, making them perfect for small spaces, apartments, and homes without gardens. Once set up, all they require is regular watering. Mushroom grow kits also make thoughtful gifts for Christmas and other special occasions. Kits can usually grow all year round, but if you're in a warm or cold climate, or if growing your kits in summer, you will need to take some precautions to keep your kits cool or warm. High or low temperatures can negatively impact or stop mushroom growth. Different kits are better suited to warmer or colder temperatures. See the temperature guide at the bottom of the page.
Mushroom Kit (Green Box)
Our best-selling range, these distinctive green-box kits offer excellent value compared to other brands and typically produce 1.5–2 kg of mushrooms. Varieties include White Button, Portabello, and Combination (which contains both White Button and Portabello in one kit).
Each kit includes two main components:
-
The main substrate – a mushroom compost already inoculated with mycelium
-
The casing/peat layer – supplied in a small plastic bag
To set up the kit, simply open the casing bag and spread the contents evenly over the compost base. We strongly recommend watching the instructional video below, as following the initial setup steps correctly is essential for a successful crop. After setup, only consistent watering is required.
Frequently Asked Questions?
Q. Are these mushroom kits organic (Green Boxes)?
A. After calling the manufacturer, I was told the following:
The main part of the kit (the large bag) that includes the compost and mushroom spawns is actually organic, but it has not been certified as such. The second, smaller bag included in the mushroom kit (ie, the bag of peat) is not certified organic; however, the bag of peat is just pure peat taken straight from the ground with nothing added, and so is totally natural.
Regarding the oyster mushrooms specifically, they said the following: (THIS DOES NOT REFER TO LIFE CYKEL KITS)
The compost is completely organic, but I could not comment on the spawn as the oyster spawn comes from France.
Q. Are all products in these mushroom kits, ie green boxes (soil, fungus, etc), all fully Australian produce?
A. From the Manufacturer: The Peat is from overseas, as all peat for growing mushrooms is from overseas.
Q. I’m hoping to grow mushrooms outside in my garden. I don’t mind if they’re in a tub, log, or from the ground. Can the combination (or white button or portabello) box kit be placed outside? Does it have to stay in the bag?
A. Answer from the manufacturer: " The customer is better off growing the kit in the box, and once the kit has finished growing, put the compost in the garden. Usually, you will get mushrooms coming through in the garden".The main part of the kit (the large bag) that includes the compost and mushroom spawns is actually organic, but it has not been certified as such.
