Why Do We Recommend Origins Lucerne Hay?
The digestive systems of rabbits and guinea pigs have adapted to a diet high in fibre, which is characteristic of herbivores.
High-quality indigestible fibre assists the movement of food through the digestive system. A lack of fibre can cause the digestive tract to slow down, leading to gastrointestinal stasis. Additionally, both guinea pigs and rabbits have continuously growing teeth. The process of eating hay helps to grind down their teeth, preventing overgrowth and disease.
Hay is the most critical component of your rabbit or guinea pig’s diet! It is essential to understand the different types of hay to ensure you provide your small animal with the correct type of hay that meets its nutritional requirements.
Lucerne (also known as alfalfa) legume hay is high in calcium and protein. The high calcium and protein content of Lucerne hay is excellent for supporting the development of young rabbits and guinea pigs, as well as meeting the increased nutritional demands of pregnant and lactating animals. As young rabbits and guinea pigs reach adulthood it is recommended to switch them to Fescue hay.
