How Fruition fruit fly traps work
The lure system has two components. One attracts egg-laying female fruit flies, while the other attracts immature female and male fruit flies. Together with the trap’s shape and colour, these lures draw flies to the sticky disc, where they are captured.
By targeting females as well as immature males, the traps help reduce the number of pest fruit flies around your developing produce.
When to install the traps
Install traps before fruit becomes attractive to fruit flies. This is generally while the fruit is still hard and green, before ripening begins.
Assemble the traps and activate the lures according to the instructions supplied with your pack.
How many traps do I need?
- Fruit trees up to 3 metres tall: use one trap per tree.
- Fruit trees taller than 3 metres: use two traps per tree.
- Vegetable crops: use one trap per 10 m × 10 m area.
One two-trap pack provides the recommended number for two smaller trees or one larger tree.
Where to position the traps
Fruit trees
Hang traps 1.5–2 metres above the ground. For trees up to 3 metres tall, position one trap on the northern side, in the outer canopy. Choose a visible position that is not exposed to constant sunlight.
For trees taller than 3 metres, hang a second trap on the southern side of the tree.
Vegetable crops
Secure the trap to a stake or another rigid support, positioning it just above the crop canopy. Use one trap for each 10 m × 10 m growing area.
Replacement and handling
Traps are effective for up to 12 weeks. Replace a trap sooner if its sticky surface becomes densely covered with fruit flies. Replace traps when the lure sachets have been open for 12 weeks rather than continuing to rely on older lures.
Avoid touching the sticky surface. If adhesive gets onto skin or gloves, the manufacturer recommends using vegetable oil to help remove it.
At the end of use, disassemble the traps and separate components for disposal through appropriate household waste and recycling collections. Check your local recycling requirements before disposing of the plastic cages.
