Tomato Mighty Red (Solanum lycopersicum) is a tall-growing tomato variety that produces large, tasty, globe-shaped fruit. It is an excellent choice for home vegetable gardens where large, flavoursome tomatoes are desired. Mighty Red grows to 1.5m or taller and requires a sturdy 2-metre stake to support the plant as it develops and carries fruit.

Planting & Growing Tips

Cultivate well-drained soil to a depth of approximately 15cm before planting. Choose a sunny position protected from frost. Install a sturdy 2-metre stake at planting time so the plant can be supported as it grows without disturbing the roots later. Mulch around the plant during warm weather to help retain soil moisture and keep the root zone cool. Water consistently around the base of the plant, particularly during flowering and fruit development. Mighty Red is a climbing tomato, so training the plant to two or three main leaders can help keep growth manageable and improve airflow around the plant.

Growing Mighty Red Tomatoes in Pots

Mighty Red can also be grown in a large container in a sunny position. For tall-growing tomatoes, choose a container with good drainage and approximately 20–25 litres of growing volume to provide sufficient room for moisture and nutrients around the roots. A sturdy 2-metre stake or suitable tomato support will still be required.

Companion Planting

Tomato Mighty Red can be planted with basil, beans, carrots, chives, lettuce and parsley.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Tomato Mighty Red need staking?

Can Tomato Mighty Red be grown in a pot?
