Horticulture Charcoal (OCS)
In Australia, we manufacture charcoal from a blend of some of our hardest Australian hardwoods, including Western Grey Box, Ironbark, and the world's hardest timber Bull Oak. This blend will hold up to approximately 120% of its weight in water, and will not break down for hundreds of years. A long-lasting substrate ideal as a growing medium for orchids and other epiphytic plants. Increased air-filled porosity. Adds potassium and limits the acidic effect of some other media such as pine bark.
Application: Add charcoal to potting mix for orchids, bromeliads, or for other plants that require free drainage. Rates of application will vary according to the plants. add approximately 1 part charcoal to 4 parts potting mix.

Frequently Asked Question
Q. Can this horticultural charcoal be used as biochar?
A. Not really, as each type of charcoal has a different purpose. Horticultural charcoal is designed to improve soil aeration, drainage, and prevent rot in containers, making it suitable only for orchids or plants with similar requirements. Biochar is super heat-treated to make it more porous and, therefore, more suitable as a general soil improver for most plants. It helps retain nutrients and improve soil structure.
