Q. What size feeder would you recommend for 3 backyard chooks?
A. There is no ideal size, but two factors to consider when picking a size are: will it fit nicely in the coop without taking up too much space and how often you would like to refill the feeder? Adult chickens eat about 400g of feed a day, and some feed will also be wasted. For simplicity's sake, let's just say that 500g of feed is used per day; therefore, your 3 chooks would use about 1.5kg per day or 10.5kg per week. If you have a 12 kg feeder, you would most likely have to refill the feeder once per week.
