Chicken Feeder Size & Age Guide
The recommended feeder size will depend on the age and size of your chickens, as well as the number of birds being fed.
- 1.5 kg Feeder – approximately 0–6 weeks: Best suited to young chicks. This smaller feeder is easier for very young chickens to access and is a good choice during the early brooding stage.
- 3 kg Feeder – approximately 3–4 weeks and older: Suitable for growing chicks, pullets and smaller adult chickens. It can also be used from a younger age if the chicks are comfortably able to access the feeding tray. Choosing the 3 kg size from the beginning can be a useful option because it may avoid needing to upgrade from the 1.5 kg feeder after only a few weeks.
- 5 kg Feeder – approximately 6 weeks and older: Suitable for larger growing chickens, pullets and adult hens. Its larger capacity also makes it more practical for feeding several birds.
- 8 kg Feeder – approximately 8 weeks and older: Best suited to larger growers and adult chickens. The larger capacity makes it particularly suitable for established flocks or where you want to refill the feeder less frequently.
HOT TIP: A practical option is to choose the 3 kg feeder right from the start. Although it is a little larger for newly hatched chicks, we have found that young chickens can still access the feed without any real difficulty. Starting with the 3 kg size also means it can be used for much longer, reducing the need to replace a smaller feeder as your chicks grow.
Please note: These ages are a general guide only. Chicken breeds vary considerably in size and growth rate. Smaller breeds may need the smaller feeders for longer, while fast-growing or large breeds may comfortably move to a larger feeder sooner. The feeder should always be positioned so that the chickens can comfortably reach the feed.
