Basic Guide to Sprouting Seeds
Start with clean equipment, fresh drinking-quality water and a small batch of seed. Wash your hands before handling the seeds and clean your containers thoroughly between batches.
- Rinse the seed thoroughly with water.
- Soak the seed in a clean jar or bucket for 24 hours, using twice as much water as seed. All seed must remain submerged during this period.
- Drain the water and rinse the seed thoroughly.
- Spread the seed in trays or shallow containers lined with clean paper towels. Spread it in a single layer rather than piling seeds on top of one another.
- Gently pat away excess water. The seed should remain moist but should not sit in pooled water or be allowed to dry out completely.
- Keep the seed in a cool place out of direct sunlight. Rinse gently at least twice daily and drain each time thoroughly. Replace paper towels if they become dirty or waterlogged.
- The original guide suggests that seeds may begin sprouting within 12–24 hours after soaking. Actual timing varies, and the different ingredients may not all sprout at the same time.
Important hygiene information: Do not feed seed that shows mould, develops a sour or unpleasant smell, or feels slimy. Discard the entire affected batch and clean the equipment before starting again. Harmful bacteria may be present without visible signs or an obvious smell, so appearance alone does not guarantee safety.
IMPORTANT NOTE: This basic guide does not guarantee that the sprouts you produce will be safe for your birds. Even when care is taken, seed can spoil during soaking and sprouting.

Feeding and Storage
Offer freshly prepared sprouts as part of a varied, species-appropriate diet. This mix is not a complete diet on its own. Prepare small batches and remove uneaten sprouts promptly, particularly in warm weather.
Store the dry seed mix in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, moisture and pests. Keep the packaging securely closed or transfer the dry seed into a clean, dry, food-safe container. Keep dry seed separate from soaking and sprouting equipment.

What is the shelf life of this product?
This product does not have an expiry or best-before date on the packaging, but the manufacturer has advised us that the seed should sprout well within 8–10 months, assuming it has been stored correctly.
As a rule of thumb, consider using the sprouting mix within 6 months of purchase to allow for previous storage by the manufacturer and retailer. As with all seed, it is preferable to use it promptly. If storing it for extended periods, it is especially important to check the seed before use and discard any that look or smell spoiled.
These timeframes refer to the dry seed mix, not to seed that has already been soaked or sprouted. They are a guide rather than a guarantee of germination.
