This Organic Coarse Layer Chicken Feed by Country Heritage Feeds is a whole grain ration similar to the old-fashioned “Scratch Mix”. Typical ingredients may include wheat, sorghum, barley, triticale, pearl millet, sunflower seed, mung beans and corn. These are mixed without any milling, resulting in a “whole grain” consistency. The diverse mix of colours provides the feed with an appearance similar to muesli, making it very appealing to both the chicken and its owner.

Application - The CHF Organic Coarse Layer is specifically designed for laying birds in backyard environments and provides the daily cereal requirement needed for healthy laying hens. Incorporated into the whole grain blend is a “protein pellet” which contains essential vitamins and minerals, protein meals and trace minerals. This ensures the integrity of the feed is maintained and avoids the separation issues that can occur if adding these ingredients individually.
Feed Directions - This organic chicken feed is formulated for laying birds. (Approx. 18 – 20 weeks). For young pullets, it is advisable to begin blending the CHF Organic Coarse Layer with the CHF Organic Chick Starter Grower Mash from around 16 weeks to facilitate a smooth transition to the layer feed and ensure that extra calcium is provided to the birds as they mature and begin egg production.
Typical feed consumption is between 130g and 150g per head per day and is best made accessible through a specially designed self-feeder. To minimise wastage, ensure your feeder is elevated so the birds can comfortably access the feed, but high enough that they cannot scratch it out onto the ground with their feet. Always ensure that birds have access to an ample supply of clean drinking water.
Suggestion: For those who prefer whole organic grains with nothing else added - see our 4-grain mix below.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. Is this organic chicken feed suitable for sprouting?
A. It's generally not recommended to sprout this mix because it contains pellets and other ingredients that may be adversely affected by water. It may be possible to do this by separating the whole grains alone for sprouting, but even this might not work, as the grains have also been treated with oil and vitamins. For organic sprouting, consider the Organic 4 Grain Mix, available in 25 kg.
Q. Is this mix chicken feed vegetarian, or does it include meat products?
A. This product does include meat products in the form of meat meal. For an organic, vegetarian feed alternative, please consider the Soy-Free and Vegetarian Mash (20kg) or the Layer Vegetarian Mash (20kg).
Q. Does your organic chook food contain Astaxanthin? It's a powerful antioxidant and immune booster, and is used in Asia and the Americas. It's what gives salmon the pink flesh and gives them the energy to swim up waterfalls for days to breed. It's great for many things. Great for humans and animals of all types of horses, dogs, birds, fish, athletes etc If you could look into it for me as I would love to buy some as I use it myself but find it hard squeezing capsules into food for my chooks, it get all over my fingers etc and is a wasteful way to do it.
A. Currently, our organic chicken feed does not contain the antioxidant Astaxanthin. I have passed on this information to the manufacturer, and they said they would look into it to see if it's feasible as a poultry feed ingredient.
