Murphy’s Sprouting Seed Mix for Birds is a blend of seeds, mung beans and peas for preparing fresh sprouts at home. Labelled Murphy’s Parrot Sprouting Mix, it provides a convenient way to add variety and different textures to your parrot’s diet.

Supplied as a dry mix for sprouting, rather than ready-grown sprouts. Available in 1 kg, 2.5 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg and 20 kg sizes.

Ingredients

Grey stripe sunflower, safflower, hulled oats, mung beans, Dunn peas and maple peas.

Refer to the packaging for the ingredients supplied in your batch.

How to prepare sprouts

The following is a general sprouting guide. Follow any preparation instructions supplied with your pack.

  1. Use a clean sprouting container and prepare a small batch.
  2. Rinse the mix thoroughly with clean water, then soak overnight, allowing room for the ingredients to expand.
  3. Drain and rinse thoroughly after soaking.
  4. Rinse and drain at least twice daily while sprouting. Do not leave the mix sitting in water between rinses.
  5. Offer fresh sprouts in small amounts alongside your bird’s regular diet.

Sprouting times vary between ingredients. Discard any batch with an unpleasant smell, mould or signs of spoilage. Clean the equipment thoroughly before starting again.

Storage

Store the dry mix in a cool, dry place and keep it in an airtight container after opening. The packaging notes that an absorption pack is included; remove it before preparing or feeding the mix.

Frequently asked questions

Use it to add variety alongside an appropriate balanced diet. It is not labelled as a complete feed and should not be your bird’s only food.
