How effective is Scat?

Scat is a water-soluble powder developed to repel birds and animals from consuming valuable fruit crops and ornamentals. Scat has a bitter taste that repels a wide variety of birdlife, domestic pets, rats, possums and rabbits. It is not always 100% effective in every situation, as all birds and animals react differently to environmental pressures. Not all animals respond immediately, and persistence is necessary to ensure that re-training is successful. Scat is best applied in conjunction with other methods wherever possible. Providing an alternative source of food for the birds or animals will help protect the plants sprayed with Scat.

How safe is Scat?

Scat is a low-hazard formulation that, when applied as directed on the pack, is completely harmless to living creatures and humans. It has no withholding period, and if necessary, can easily be washed off before eating the fruit. It is not recommended to mix Scat with any other chemicals. Staining of some surfaces may occur. Spray a small area to test product suitability.

How long does Scat last?

Once applied, Scat can remain active for up to eight weeks and leaves no harmful residues. Scat can be removed with watering or heavy rain. Use of a wetter sticking agent will help Scat remain active in damp conditions.

How far does Scat go?

Scat is mixed at a rate of 50g/Litre of hot water, and 1kg of Scat is enough to treat up to 600 square metres.

When to apply?

Where possible, apply the first application of Scat before a problem occurs or as soon as possible after the first damage is seen. With resistant animals, stronger solutions can be applied initially, and treatments may need to be done more frequently. Following successful treatment, repeat applications can be made using a half-strength solution; Ensure new growth is adequately protected by repeat spraying, as necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions: (by the manufacturer)

Questions related to the Liquid and Powdered Form of Scat.

Q. Is there a withholding period for Scat?

A. No, there is no withholding period. Scat is easily washed off before eating.

Q. What is the mixing rate for Scat, and can I dissolve Scat powder in some hot water and then add the relevant amount of cold water?

A. 50g/Litre of hot water.

5 level dessert spoons or 12 teaspoons (or five very heaped teaspoons) = Approx. 50g
1Kg will treat up to 600 sq metres.
For example, if you want 2 litres of solution, you can put 100g of Scat into a container and add 500mL (or whatever amount) of hot water to dissolve the Scat. You then need to add 1.5L (or the specified amount of cold water) to make up the correct amount of solution to water, adhering to the 50g per Litre Ratio. Either way, the product needs to be used straight away.

Q. What is Scat & what does it do?

A. Scat is available as a water-soluble powder or in ready-to-use form. Scat has been developed to help repel birds & animals from eating valuable fruit crops and ornamentals. Scat has a bitter taste that repels a wide variety of birds, domestic pets, rats, possums and rabbits. Not all animals respond immediately & persistence is necessary to ensure that re-training is successful.

Q. How long does Scat Last?

A. Scat can remain active for up to 8 weeks & leaves no harmful residues. However, it will wash off with rain or watering and will need to be reapplied afterwards.

Q. Do you need to reapply Scat once it rains?

A. Yes. Scat is removed with watering or heavy rain, so you will need to reapply after this time. Using a wetter sticking agent will help Scat remain active in damp conditions.

Q. Does Scat work every time?

A. It is not always 100% effective in every situation, as all birds & animals react differently to environmental pressures. It is best applied in conjunction with other methods wherever possible. Not all animals respond immediately & persistence is necessary to ensure that re-training is successful.

Q. If I use Scat, do I still need to net my fruit trees?

A. Yes, we still recommend netting your fruit trees. Scat will make the fruit taste unpleasant to birds; however, they may still eat the fruit depending on how greatly they rely on your trees as their food source. Scat will help deter them from eating your fruit and encourage them to go elsewhere for food, but a physical barrier, such as netting, is always a good idea.

Q. If children touch surfaces treated with Scat, is the residual toxic?

A. Scat is a safe, non-toxic product.

Q. Can I spray Scat on my tin shed?

A. Do not apply Scat onto metal surfaces. Scat contains the active ingredient aluminium Ammonium Sulphate, which can react with tin.
