Kiryuzuna (Volcanic Sand) 3-6mm 16L (Japan imported)

Features: Suitable for peat, moss, water grass, micro landscape, orchid plants and bonsai, etc. Can also be mixed with other cultivation media.

Kiryuzuna is a kind of volcanic sand produced in Japan, and contains a large amount of Fe2O3 (iron oxide) in hard rock sand. Used for planting orchids, deciduous plants, etc. This medium has good permeability, water storage, flowability and drainage. Suitable for plants such as bonsai and alpine flowers. Japan's horticultural cultivation medium resources are very rich, especially volcanic lava. Due to frequent volcanic activity, Japan enjoys abundant volcanic resources. Volcanic ash, volcanic rocks and pumice left over from volcanic eruptions in ancient times are piled up near volcanoes. Using this unique resource, Japan has developed a rich horticultural cultivation medium product, and the red jade soil and the deer soil cultivation medium are two representative ones. In addition, there are Kiryu sand, sunstone and physalis.

About using Kiryuzuna to grow Bonsai, Orchids, Cacti, Succulents and other plants:

Kiryuzuna (also called Kiryu soil) is a type of hard, volcanic, mineral-rich soil from Japan, often used in bonsai and specialty plant cultivation. It provides excellent drainage, aeration, and mineral support. Here’s how it benefits various plants:

1. Bonsai

  • Why Use Kiryuzuna?
    • Retains structure and does not break down easily, ensuring long-term drainage.
    • Rich in minerals like iron, which helps root and foliage health.
    • Commonly mixed with Akadama and pumice in bonsai soil blends.
  • How to Use:
    • Mix with Akadama and pumice (e.g., 30% Kiryuzuna, 40% Akadama, 30% pumice).
    • Use as a top dressing to prevent soil erosion.

2. Orchids

  • Why Use Kiryuzuna?
    • Provides excellent aeration and prevents root rot.
    • Can be mixed with bark and sphagnum moss for stability.
  • How to Use:
    • Mix with other orchid media like sphagnum moss or pine bark (e.g., 20-30% Kiryuzuna).
    • Ideal for terrestrial orchids requiring better drainage.

3. Cacti & Succulents

  • Why Use Kiryuzuna?
    • Drains well, preventing root rot.
    • Helps retain essential minerals while avoiding compacted soil.
  • How to Use:
    • Mix with pumice and sand for an airy, well-draining mix (e.g., 40% pumice, 30% Kiryuzuna, 30% sand).
    • Use as a top layer to prevent moisture retention near the crown.

4. Other Plants

  • Carnivorous Plants: Works well in Nepenthes soil mixes due to aeration and drainage.
  • Tropical Plants: Can be used in custom mixes for plants needing well-drained but mineral-rich soil.

Kiryuzuna is an excellent addition to specialty plant cultivation where drainage and mineral retention are crucial.

More About Kiryuzuna:

In Japan, such media products are used alone or mixed with other media for potted plants, such as peat, coco, bark, etc., and are widely used in horticultural production. Japan's horticultural cultivation mixed medium, the proportion of inorganic minerals mixed is much higher than the proportion of peat. Compared with many other countries, especially Europe and the United States, peat is used as the main cultivation medium. Japan uses such products as the main cultivation medium, which has obvious advantages. The application practice in Japan for many years proves that these products are also good soil improvement materials, which can comprehensively improve the soil condition and effectively promote plant growth.
