Frequently Asked Questions: (by the manufacturer)
Q. Is there a withholding period for Scat?
A. No, there is no withholding period. Scat is easily washed off before eating.
Q. What is the mixing rate for Scat, and can I dissolve Scat powder in some hot water and then add the relevant amount of cold water?
A. 50g/Litre of hot water.
5 level dessert spoons or 12 teaspoons (or five very heaped teaspoons) = Approx. 50g
1Kg will treat up to 600 sq metres.
For example, if you want 2 litres of solution, you can put 100g of Scat into a container and add 500mL (or whatever amount) of hot water to dissolve the Scat. You then need to add 1.5L (or whatever the amount of cold water) to make up the right amount of solution to water, sticking to the 50g per Litre. Either way, the product needs to be used straight away.
Q. What is Scat & what does it do?
A. Scat is available as a water-soluble powder or in ready-to-use form. Scat has been developed to help repel birds & animals from eating valuable fruit crops and ornamentals. Scat has a bitter taste that repels a wide variety of birds, domestic pets, rats, possums and rabbits. Not all animals respond immediately & persistence is necessary to ensure that re-training is successful.
Q. How long does Scat Last?
A. Scat can remain active for up to 8 weeks & leaves no harmful residues. However, it will wash off with rain or watering and will need to be reapplied afterwards.
Q. Do you need to reapply Scat once it rains?
A. Yes. Scat is removed with watering or heavy rain, so you will need to reapply after this time. Using a wetter sticking agent will help Scat remain active in damp conditions.
Q. Does Scat work every time?
A. It is not always 100% effective in every situation, as all birds & animals react differently to environmental pressures. It is best applied in conjunction with other methods wherever possible. Not all animals respond immediately & persistence is necessary to ensure that re-training is successful.
Q. If I use Scat, do I still need to net my fruit trees?
A. Yes, we still recommend netting your fruit trees. Scat will make the fruit taste unpleasant to birds; however, they may still eat the fruit depending on how greatly they rely on your trees as their food source. Scat will help deter them from eating your fruit and encourage them to go elsewhere for food, but a physical barrier, such as netting, is always a good idea.
Q. If children touch surfaces treated with Scat, is the residual toxic?
A. Scat is a safe, non-toxic product.
Q. Can I spray Scat on my tin shed?
A. Do not apply Scat onto metal surfaces. Scat contains the active ingredient aluminium Ammonium Sulphate, which can react with tin.
