What to feed Red Factor Canaries ?
Color bred canaries are specially bred to be one specific color, but what makes this special quality possible? The most popular of all color bred canaries, the Red factor canary, was created by breeding an ordinary yellow canary with a Venezuelan black hooded red siskin, which helped to tint the feathers. However, if you give the red factor canary conventional canary food, it will turn light orange or yellow. The problem with regular feeding, is that a color bred canary is a lot like a flamingo; they get their color from what they eat!
The feed for a red factor canary needs a specific diet in order to maintain it’s appearance, and there are many ways to satisfy these dietary needs. The main way breeders get the fire engine red color that only the most stunning red factor canaries have, is by feeding them foods that are very high in carotenoids. Foods that will promote red coloring include peppers, sweet potatoes, berries, cherries, tomatoes, beets, and lots of healthy greens! These foods( however healthy and wonderful they may be for your bird) will not completely create the red color. To fully achieve the red color, you need to use a concentrate of carotenoids, which consists of two main ingredients, Canthaxanthin and Beta-Carotene.
You can find this concentrate in most pet stores, but you’ll want to look for a form of it that does not have additives such as vitamin C because they do nothing for your birds color. These extra ingredients are just there as an unnecessary additive to make the production of the concentrate cheaper, and they are much less effective than other brands. For this reason, we suggest you always check for the ingredients in your carotenoid concentrate before buying it and trying it on your bird. It has been rumored that these concentrates cause health problems in the Red factor canary, but breeders generally do not have problems with using carotenoid mixtures, just make sure you buy quality brands as opposed to the cheap store ones.
